The place
Bivouac at 2588 m on a small rocky ledge at the end of the north-west ridge of Roccia Viva (Mont Roche), municipality of Cogne (Aosta Valley, Italy). Inaugurated in 1930 and replaced in 1994, dedicated to Alessandro Martinotti, a mountaineer from Biella who died on Monte Mars in 1927. Capacity of 6 bunks with mattresses and blankets (the upper bunks fold up to allow sitting). No water in the immediate vicinity: bring your own supply. Views east over the Tribulation glacier, west over the Money glacier. Together with the neighbouring Bivouac Borghi (2686 m), a starting point for ascents of Roccia Viva, Testa della Tribolazione and Becca di Gay. About 3 h 20 from the Valnontey car park.
