The place
Bivacco Pian dei Boi ("Cattle Plain Bivouac") in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, Cesiomaggiore/Sospirolo area (Belluno, Veneto, Italy), at 1262 m elevation, Feruch-Pizzocco group. Continuous Dolomiti Bellunesi cluster (batches 250-339). CAI alpine-pasture bivouac (Pian dei Boi = a former transhumant cattle pasture, now a shelter/depot for climbers by day and night), area of subalpine beech forest and black pine (Pinus nigra dolomitica), heritage of the Cavallino-Belluno-Longarone railway network (the Vittorio Veneto-Belluno-Feltre railway, 1889-1920, an engineering masterpiece) and of the Vajont disaster (Longarone dam, 9 October 1963, a landslide-generated tsunami of 260 M m³ killing 1,917 people).
