The place

High-altitude bivouac at 3546 m on the northwest ridge of the Sasso Rosso, a few hundred metres from the Passo del Sasso Rosso, in the Bernina group (municipality of Lanzada, Valtellina, Lombardy). Four bunks on a wooden platform, open year-round. Run by the CAI Valtellinese branch. Meltwater available nearby. Alpine access from Rifugio Marinelli via the Vedretta di Fellaria (~3h), or from Rifugio Bignami via the same glacier (~5h). Included in the 'RESALP - Resilienza Strutture Alpine' project by the CNR and CAI, a pioneering study on the geo-hydrological stability of bivouacs and refuges above 2800 m in the face of climate change and permafrost retreat.
