The place
A bivouac set at 1,328 m in the Alpago-Cansiglio sector (province of Belluno, Veneto), at the heart of the great millennial Cansiglio forest — one of the largest beech-fir forests in Italy, once the "Bosco da Reme di San Marco" which supplied wood for the oars of the Venetian fleet. Located on the fringe of the western plateaus of the Cansiglio massif, on the trails of the Sentiero Italia and the great traverses linking Tambre, Spert and the Col Indes. A basic shelter used by hikers on loops towards the Pian Cansiglio, the Bus de la Lum (a tragic chasm from the 1943-45 Resistance massacres) and the Monte Pizzoc (1,565 m). An exceptional setting: deep forests, truffle-bearing alpine pastures, the presence of the Cimbrian community of Vallorch and iconic wildlife such as wolf, deer and black grouse.
