The place
Bivouac at 2004 m at the Alpe Corte Rossa, in the Val Cravariola (municipality of Montecrestese, Ossola, Piedmont, Italy), a border area beyond the watershed separating the Ossola from the canton of Ticino — a former pasture disputed for centuries between Italy and Switzerland. Owned by the municipality of Montecrestese. Always open, 8 bunk beds, no sanitary facilities, water unverified. Equipped with an efficient wood stove, a gas cooker, crockery, cooking utensils, table and benches. On the GTA, Sentiero Italia, SP1, SP2 and SP3 routes. Inaugurated on 29 June 2019, flagship project of the Associazione Sentieri degli Spalloni (smugglers' trails association); restoration began in 2016 (slate roof and windows), then ground-floor works in 2017, dormitory mezzanine in 2018, perimeter and outer walls in 2019.
