The place
Unstaffed bivouac shelter set at 1,356 m in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, within the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park (northern Apennines, on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna). A remarkable location at the heart of one of the finest high-altitude beech forests in the Italian Apennines, on the edge of the great Alta Via dei Parchi traverse (stages 1-6) linking the Appennino National Park to the Apuan Alps. A basic, freely accessible shelter offering emergency refuge for hikers on the Park's trails. Exceptional setting: a 26,149-hectare national park created in 2001, a UNESCO "MaB" biosphere reserve since 2015, rich in centuries-old beech forests (listed by UNESCO as "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe"). Emblematic wildlife: Apennine wolf, mouflon, red deer, roe deer, golden eagle, peregrine falcon. Exact usage conditions and capacity should be checked with the Park authority before setting out.
