Bivacco Alpe Straolgio
The place
Bivouac at Alpe Straolgio at 1803 m, in the Lepontine Alps (Ossola region, Piedmont). The Alpe Straolgio belongs to the Portaiola district — one of the most productive and fertile valleys of the Val Grande — settled by various communities since the 13th century. Abandoned in 1968, it is being revived thanks to a top-tier restoration project aiming to redevelop it as a high-altitude agritourism facility, as well as an eco-volunteering site and a base for studies on alpine biodiversity. A fairly large structure but lacking basic comforts: no tables, no benches, no stove — the hearth is simply an area of the floor ringed with stones, which tends to hold the smell of smoke. Access from Alpe Scaredi via the Chapel of Terza. From the summit, a short, easy ridge leads to Cimone di Straolgio (2162 m) and Pizzo Stagno (2182 m).
