Bivacco Alpe Ragozzale
The place
Bivouac at Alpe Ragozzale at 1906 m (DB: 1912 m), in the Lepontine Alps (Ossola / Val Grande region, Piedmont). Access via a long and very difficult trail from Trontano: about 5 hours for 1390 m of elevation gain, rated EE (expert hikers). Unstaffed refuge, always open, capacity ~10 people on a wooden platform. Wood-stove heating, electric lighting via solar panels. A special feature of the site: Alpe Ragozzale is a wild alpine pasture where local mountain people carved a "gate" into the rock (the "Porta di Ragozzale") to allow livestock through — reaching it remains an adventure today. A classic link to Beura via the Trontano-Beura traverse.
