Bivacco Alpe Curgei
The place
Bivacco Alpe Curgei (also known as Bivacco del Gufo) at 1350 m, on the alpine pasture of the same name in Val Grande National Park (Lepontine Alps, province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont). Unstaffed refuge, always open, capacity of about 8 people. Fountain nearby, wood-stove heating. Access: from Verbania reach Miazzina then the hamlet of Alpe Pala, where the car park is located. Follow the marked trail that runs along the eastern side of the southern ridge of the Pizzo Pernice, go around its summit, cross the ridge to the opposite side and reach the bivacco. Managed by the Pro Loco di Miazzina (0323/494101). Wild setting typical of Val Grande, one of Italy's last true wilderness areas.
