The place
Private hut at 1,325 m on the Rock & Pillar Range (coastal Otago, NZ), managed by Strath Taieri Agriculture & Rural Tourism (START). Two dormitories and a large common room with a table-tennis table. Access: Glencreag Track most direct, marked, +1,000 m of elevation gain (2-3 h+); Kinvara Road driveable, on foot or by mountain bike 3h45-4h; Old Dunstan Road along the ridge, 3h30 on foot. Built in 1946 by the Otago Ski Club to develop a ski resort, restored in the 1980s by the Otago Tramping & Mountaineering Club.
