The place

Basic one-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Hāwea Conservation Park, Wanaka/Makarora area, Otago region (South Island, New Zealand), at 779 metres elevation. Free access. No DOC-marked trail: independent navigation required, with map, compass and GPS. Essential river-crossing skills: do not cross in flood or without safe crossing points, and check NIWA flow data before setting out. An isolated hut reserved for experienced backcountry trampers.
