Big Bay Hut
The place
A 9-bunk Standard Hut of the Department of Conservation, located in the northern Fiordland National Park on the West Coast (South Island, New Zealand). No booking required, but purchase of a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youths) is mandatory for each night — to be deposited in the hut's honesty box. The hut serves as an endpoint or waypoint for the Pyke-Big Bay Route, a demanding tramping traverse from the Hollyford Road to the West Coast, intended for experienced and well-equipped trampers. The section between Martins Bay Hut and Big Bay Hut, near Long Reef, is overgrown and has a small landslide making navigation difficult. An exceptional setting of an isolated beach on the wild Fiordland coast, in one of the most remote areas of New Zealand, at the junction of Fiordland National Park and Te Wāhipounamu (UNESCO).
