The place

Small self-catering hut of the ÖTK (Österreichischer Touristenklub) at 1846 m, set at the foot of the Hochseiler in the Hochkönig massif (Berchtesgaden Alps, Salzburg). The site's history dates back to the 18th century; the original hut, built as a temporary shelter, was completely destroyed by an avalanche in 1895. The Maria Alm section rebuilt it that same year, about a hundred metres below the original location. Before the Second World War, the hut was even rented out, with the tenants' main income coming from guiding climbs on the Hochkönig. Fully rebuilt in 1995 to shore up its foundations. Operates as a Selbstversorger (self-catering) hut: bring your own food, bedding and utensils.
