The place
Historic mountain hotel at 2061 m on the Gemmi trail between Kandersteg and Leukerbad, one of the oldest inns in the Valais Alps. Established as early as 1742 as an inn and customs post on the route linking Bern to Valais. The guest book has seen the likes of Horace-Bénédict de Saussure (1777), Mark Twain (1878), Alexandre Dumas (1872), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1893), Lenin (1904) and even Picasso (1933). Sober renovated rooms, showers and washrooms on each floor. Accessible by cable car from Kandersteg (Sunnbüel) and from Leukerbad (Gemmi). A good starting point for ski touring and hiking in the upper Engstligen / Daubensee area.
