Beech Hut

The place

Historic 4-bunk DOC hut in the Eyre Mountains / Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park (Southland), at 771 m. Built around 1905 by the owners of Fairlight Station, "one of the oldest surviving mustering huts in Southland." Built from young beech trees from the nearby forest, with corrugated iron cladding and roof. Access via Cainard Road from SH 6 at Fairlight, then a 4WD track along the Mataura River for about 5 km, followed by a 4-hour walk off the marked track. Free. Overlooks the Mataura River from the edge of the beech forest on the true right bank.
