The place

Alpine refuge perched at 3195 m in the Ridanna valley (Ridnauntal), on the South Tyrolean side of the Stubai Alps. The highest refuge in South Tyrol, it can accommodate around a hundred people and houses the "Maria im Schnee" chapel, one of the highest Marian shrines in the Alps. Built in March 1894 and inaugurated on 18 August — the birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Ceded to the Italian state in 1922, occupied by the army until 1979, rebuilt and extended in 1987-1989 under CAI Verona's management. Since 2015, jointly managed by AVS, CAI and public bodies.
