The place

Former mountain customs post converted into a self-catering cabin for hikers, at the Col de Cou (municipality of Champéry, Valais), just a few meters from the French border on the Morzine/Samoëns side. The building housed border guards until 1995, when it kept watch over smuggling. Converted by an association bringing together Champéry, Morzine, and Samoëns, it now offers around forty sleeping places and about fifty dining places. Drinking water piped up to nearly 2000 m altitude — the project's main technical challenge. A Franco-Swiss stopover shelter used on cross-border walking tours (Tour du Mont Ruan, etc.).
