Baraquement de Viraysse.

The place

Former military barracks at 2510 m at the northern foot of the Col de Mallemort (Ubaye, Hautes-Alpes), within a group of huts more or less in ruins of which only this one can serve as shelter. Only one of the huts is usable as an emergency shelter: a former stable with 4 large wooden sleeping platforms allowing a rest (the building to the right on entering the compound through the south gate). Built from 1887 to 1889 at the same time as the Viraysse battery, as part of the defensive organization of the Ubaye. The term "baraquement" comes from its temporary nature, intended to house mobile units of Alpine light infantry or chasseurs. Maintained and occupied until 1940.
