The place
Unstaffed forestry hut set at 1,783 m in the Vercors High Plateaus Nature Reserve (Villard-de-Lans / Mont Aiguille area, Isère), fully covered by IGN map 3236OT. A remarkable position nestled among the trees in an area dotted with numerous scialets (karst chasms typical of the Vercors). A spartan shelter, but one that offers a roof protecting from cold and rain — one of the 130+ shelters recorded across the massif. A former forestry service building converted into a stopover. Set in the exceptional landscape of the High Plateaus Nature Reserve (created in 1985), the largest fully protected natural area in Western Europe: subalpine grasslands, fir forests, reintroduced mouflons, and iconic wildlife such as chamois, marmots, black grouse, and golden eagles. A stop on the Grandes Traversées du Vercors (GTV) and the Nordic ski routes of the High Plateaus.
