Baraque des Carrières
The place
Unstaffed hut set at 500 m in the Central Vosges (Bas-Rhin, Andlau / Barr / Le Hohwald area), on the north-eastern edge of the Parc naturel régional des Ballons des Vosges. A basic shelter mainly used during the day — no overnight sleeping arrangements provided. Notable position at the heart of the former sandstone quarrying areas that supplied the region's iconic building material (the pink façades of the Strasbourg, Sélestat and Wissembourg cathedrals). Central Vosges forest setting: beech and fir woods, Club Vosgien trails linking Andlau, Mont Sainte-Odile and Champ du Feu. A popular day stop for hikers doing loops in the central Vosges massif, particularly on the heritage trails of the Carrières.
