Ballard Hut

The place

DOC standard backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), at 1,400 m elevation, in a clearing above the Makino River, at the northern end of the Kaweka Range. **Built in 1958 and renovated in 2003**, named after a pilot who helped with the helicopter airlift of materials. Facilities: wood burner, rainwater tank, food cupboard, long-drop toilet. Helipad 30 m upstream. Access: Makahu Road 3-3 h 30; Makahu Saddle Carpark 4-5 h; Makino Road End 5 h 15. Rates: NZ$15/night adult, $7.50 youth (5-17), free under 4; 12-month Backcountry Hut Pass.
