Baito Campo Gallina
The place
Emergency baito at 1850 m (per external database, 1876 m) on the western slope of the Corno di Campo Verde, Altopiano dei Sette Comuni (Asiago, Vicenza, Veneto). An emblematic site: after the end of the 1916 Spring Offensive, Campo Gallina was one of the largest and best organized high-altitude logistics bases set up by the Austro-Hungarian army on the northern part of the plateau. Continually expanded until the autumn of 1917, and especially active during the Italian offensive of June 1917 (Battle of Ortigara). It included shelters for a vehicle depot, an equipped field hospital, barracks and storehouses, cable cars, a small chapel, and a small cemetery. The current baito — repaired at his own expense by Albertino Libertini, with the municipality of Asiago's permission, after half a century of decay — now serves as an emergency shelter for hikers and mountain bikers.
