The place
Basic 4-bunk DOC hut at 754 m in Ruataniwha Conservation Park (Canterbury, NZ). Former mustering hut built in 1948 when it belonged to Dusky Station; a horse hitching rail is preserved outside. 4WD access only: permission and key must be obtained from Pukaki Downs Station for a fee and deposit. Bring your own firewood. Vehicles must be left at the hut (fragile alpine environment). Access sometimes closed during high fire risk.
