The place

Standard 4-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Kaweka Forest Park, Hawke's Bay region (North Island, New Zealand). Building from 1957, built to the NZFS SF70 design intended to be helicoptered in pieces from a plane, located at the back of the Kaweka Range from Makahu Saddle. Enclosed wood burner, meat safe, dry toilet (long-drop), water from the stream. Helipad 25 m downstream on the true left bank of the stream. Access from the Makahu Saddle car park in 3-4 h, or 3 h from Rocks Ahead Hut; park tracks require a 4x4 in places. No booking, payment at the honesty box: NZ$10/night adult, NZ$5 youth, free under 5.
