The place

2-bed DOC bivouac at 1,360 m in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ), at the junction of the Back Ridge and Rocks Ahead tracks. Built in 1962. Long drop toilet, meat safe, BBQ. Free. Access from Makahu Saddle 6 h via a marked track over exposed rocky terrain, or 4-5 h / 7.3 km from Kiwi Mouth Hut. Helipad 100 m away. Extreme conditions: strong to gale-force northwest winds, very cold southerly changes, heavy precipitation including snow in winter; winds > 180 km/h documented on the summits. Suited to short stays in good weather or extended crossings.
