The place
A basic 6-bunk DOC hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), at about 600 m in beech forest. Ideal for a day trip or weekend, popular with novice trampers thanks to its short walk-in. Access from SH 50 via Makaretu Road → Mill Road → Kashmir Road to the car park: 1 h / 2.7 km. Kashmir Road is steep; 4WD or AWD recommended. Renovated in February 2024 by Backcountry Trust volunteers. The nearby Black Stag Biv downstream is not recommended (poor condition). Free.
