Avoca Homestead

The place

Standard DOC 6-bunk hut in Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park (Canterbury), at 400 m. Former homestead built in 1906, restored in 2007 in its original style. Formerly an isolated Waimakariri basin sheep station, absorbed into Flock Hill Station in 1917. Access: from the SH73 / Craigieburn Road junction, follow Craigieburn Road for 20 km to the car park; vehicles prohibited beyond a locked gate (foot or bike crossing only, then a ford across the Broken River). Do not cross in flood. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
