The place

Standard hut with 26 bunks managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Holdsworth area of Tararua Forest Park, Wairarapa (North Island, New Zealand). About 15 minutes from Masterton via Norfolk Road off State Highway 2. Suitable for families and beginner hikers. Reached in 3 h (7.2 km) from the end of Mt Holdsworth Road via the Atiwhakatu Track, which follows the stream of the same name, with a suspension bridge and a few sections requiring some scrambling. Rates until June 30, 2026: weekdays NZD 10 adult, NZD 5 youth (5-17 years), free under 5; Saturdays NZD 15 adult, NZD 7.50 youth. Online booking through DOC required, no beds held for walk-ins without a reservation; same-day booking possible until 8 pm subject to availability. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted.
