The place

Historic stone-walled hut at 411 m in the West Matukituki Valley of Mount Aspiring National Park (Otago). Owned by the New Zealand Alpine Club, open to the public. 2 to 2 h 30 walk from the Raspberry Creek car park via the West Matukituki Track. Seasonal warden present October to June (gas, flush toilets); unwardened June to October (bring your own stove, non-flush toilets). Fees: up to 50 NZD for non-member adults, 25 NZD for member adults, reduced 10 NZD for youths aged 5-17, free under 4. Booking required year-round via the online DOC system. Groups of 10 or more: a notification form must be submitted at least two weeks in advance. Particular hazard: the building sits within a debris-avalanche corridor, and may close during heavy rain (more than 250 mm in 24 h).
