Antonsens Hytte
The place
Historic hut from the polar exploration era of northeast Greenland, listed in the GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) toponymic database of "Stednavne" (place names) for East Greenland. Located at approximately 74.52°N / 21.18°W, in the Wollaston Foreland / Hochstetter Forland sector, on the northeast coast of the island, at the heart of the Northeast Greenland National Park — the largest national park in the world (972,000 km²). The name "Antonsens Hytte" (Antonsen's hut) likely refers to a Danish or Norwegian trapper from the expeditions of the 1920s-1940s, an era when the archipelago and coast were traveled by Scandinavian fur hunters and explorers. These scattered hytter along the coast today serve as emergency shelters for the Sirius Patrol (sled dogs), Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring scientific expeditions, and the rare authorized polar expeditions. An exceptional Arctic setting: musk oxen, polar bears, humpback whales in summer in the fjords.
