The place

Basic two-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Lochinvar Forest Conservation Area, north Canterbury (South Island, New Zealand). Free access, no booking required. No track marked or maintained by DOC: independent navigation required with map, compass and GPS. Unimproved river and stream crossings downstream: do not cross in flood or without a safe entry and exit point; crossing training recommended through Mountain Safety New Zealand; check NIWA flow data before departure.
