The place

Serviced 28-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) on the shore of Lake Angelus in Nelson Lakes National Park (South Island, New Zealand), at 1,650 metres elevation, with panoramic mountain views. Adjacent camping area, booking required year-round for both the hut and the campsite. Demanding winters (May-October): frozen lake, snow covering all four access routes, sometimes requiring the access to the hut to be dug out. Visitors must bring their own cooking equipment; no waste management, pack everything out. Backcountry Hut Pass valid only from 30 May to 30 September. Rates through June 2026: NZD 30/night for adults, NZD 15 for children aged 5-17, free under 5. Online booking (open through June 2027), same-day booking possible until 8 pm. Warden present during peak season. Avalanche-prone terrain: appropriate training and equipment required. Invasive lindavia algae present in local lakes: dry equipment before contact with alpine waters.
