Alte Traunsteiner Hütte
The place
Self-catering hut (Selbstversorgerhütte) of the Deutscher Alpenverein, Traunstein section, set at 1580 m in the Berchtesgaden Alps (state of Salzburg, Austria) — a few hundred meters from the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte (modern staffed refuge). Built in 1901 by the Traunstein section of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein, it is no longer part of the public network: today it is reserved for use by the Traunstein section as a training facility for its members. Panoramic position over the limestone peaks of the Berchtesgadener Alpen, at the foot of the Reiter Alm and the Hundstod. Mineral setting of the high north-eastern limestone Alps, emblematic wildlife of chamois, ibex, golden eagle and bearded vulture. A former historic refuge repurposed — public access not permitted, not to be confused with the Traunsteinhaus (Naturfreunde Gmunden, Austrian Salzkammergut).
