The place
A contemporary-architecture bivouac set at 2045 m in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, in Slovenia. Designed by the Slovenian firm OFIS Arhitekti with engineers from AKT II and students from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, it replaces a fifty-year-old bivouac. Prefabricated as three modules in a workshop, the structure was airlifted to the site by helicopter in a single day in August 2015. Capacity for eight people, split between an entrance-kitchen, a living-sleeping module and a multi-level dormitory module. Freely accessible, unstaffed.
