The place
20-bunk DOC hut at 1,116 m in the eastern part of Tararua Forest Park (Wairarapa, NZ), just below the bushline. Managed by the Greater Wellington Backcountry Network. Access from Kiwi Ranch Road near Upper Hutt: 7-9 h via the Marchant Ridge, passing through Omega and Hell's Gate col. Original structure built 1915; burned down 1982; current hut built by the NZ Forest Service in 1983, extended in March 1996. No booking: Standard ticket (adults $10, children $5, free under 5) or Backcountry Hut Pass. Neighboring stages: Elder Hut 3-4 h, Cone Hut 3 h, Kime Hut 5-6 h.
