Alpe Hohenschwand
The place
Alpe Hohenschwand, one of the oldest alpine huts in the Allgäu — first mentioned in 1638. On the northwest slope of the Prodel, near Steibis in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, municipality of Oberstaufen (Bavarian Allgäu, Germany). A Selbstversorgerhütte (self-catering hut) of the SSV Ulm 1846 section of the Deutscher Alpenverein (DAV). 9 sleeping spaces across three rooms, plus a kitchen, bathroom, and toilet. No food service. Transferred in 2006 to the Bavarian State Forests through a land exchange; the building, in poor condition, was leased back to SSV Ulm 1846, which renovated it starting in 2015. Food service was discontinued in 2021 to refocus on alpine farming. Car access (max 3 vehicles) outside the snow season. In snowy winter conditions: from the Lanzenbach car park or the Hochgratbahn car park, about 1 hour on snowshoes or ski touring.
