The place
Alford Hut in the Canterbury region, in the upper Rangitata Valley/Arrowsmith Range area (South Island, New Zealand), at 932 m altitude. Part of the continuous Canterbury Rangitata cluster (batches 230-254). A DOC hut or former musterers' hut converted into a free shelter, named after a Scottish pioneer (Alford, Aberdeenshire, a typical origin for Canterbury sheep farmers in the 19th century). Zone of tussock (Chionochloa) and beech forest, heritage of the high-country shepherds of Samuel Butler.
