The place

احسي الخالفة (Ahsi al-Khalifa = "The Caliph's Well") in the Tagant region, Tidjikja/Moudjéria area (central Mauritania), at 164 m elevation, on the Sahelian plateau. FIRST SURVEY of Mauritania. Traditional well and caravan shelter, heritage of the Arab-Berber Bidhan ("White Moors", 30% of the population) and Haratines ("Black Moors", freed slaves, 40%) tribes, an area with date palm groves in the Tagant oases and on the route of the Taoudenni salt caravan (the last active trans-Saharan caravan).
