The place

Berggasthaus at 1454 m in the Alpstein region, municipality of Weissbad (Appenzell, Switzerland). Operating since 1860, it is one of the oldest mountain inns in Switzerland. The site has even older roots: hermits lived there as early as 1658, and archaeological evidence points to very ancient occupation by cave dwellers. Open every day from 1 May to October from 7:30 am, hot meals from 11 am to 8:30 pm. Closed Sundays from 6 pm in May, June and September (except public holidays). Access via the Ebenalpbahn cable car from Wasserauen, then 15 minutes on foot through the Wildkirchli caves, or a 2h30 hike via the Seealpsee.
