Aeroflot: Russia's Flag Carrier Airline Aeroflot, also known as Aéroflot in Russian, is Russia's largest airline and the country's flag carrier. Founded on February 9, 1923, Aeroflot is one of the oldest airlines in the world. During the Soviet period, Aeroflot was the largest airline in the world. History and Merger of Airlines Shortly after the First World War, the Soviet government adopted a decree on the organization of the Civil Aviation Council. In 1922, the first international air route linking Moscow to Berlin was opened. In 1923, the first regular domestic route between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod was established. Aeroflot was born on February 1, 1932, from the merger of three Soviet airlines of the 1920s: Dobrolet, Ukrvozdukhput and SakAvia. Dobrolet was created for passenger transport, mail flights and cargo. In 1932, the name Aeroflot was adopted. Figures and Achievements In 2011, Aeroflot carried 14.1 million passengers worldwide, reaching up to 20 million including its subsidiaries. In 2012, the airline was ranked in the top 5 European airlines in terms of fleet modernity. Aeroflot launched the "100 by 100" project, aiming to carry 100 million passengers across the whole group for the company's centenary in 2023. Destinations and Fleet Aeroflot operates passenger and cargo flights to 97 destinations in 49 countries from Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport. The airline has a fleet made up of Russian, European and American-built aircraft. In 2019, Aeroflot ordered 14 Airbus A350s to modernize its fleet.
