The place

Very small shelter open year-round at 1680 m near the Chalet de Colomban d'en Haut (Chablais, Haute-Savoie). The main chalet is closed but occasionally serves as a small café in summer. Only a tiny shelter offers protection in bad weather, no comforts, very spartan with an earth floor, but a door that closes. Very poor insulation (daylight visible between the walls and roof), a small window that doesn't close. In winter, a few centimetres of snow can build up inside; depending on snow cover, sometimes inaccessible. No water at the refuge, but a maintained pool less than 5 min walk toward les Frêtes at the same elevation: the Bassin de Colomban. For emergency use; sleeping possible if well equipped and with no other choice. A few minutes away, the majestic Croix de Colomban with a panoramic view.
