Abri des Varos

The place

Shelter at 1372 m in the Bornes-Aravis massif (Haute-Savoie), accessible from Montremont via the Varos trail / GR Tour Aravis-Tournette. Managed by the ONF, not intended for regular hiker use except in bad weather. Beyond the shelter, the trail becomes exposed and requires care (sections secured with handrails between 1380 m and 1450 m), but remains well maintained and stabilised. Winter access is nearly impossible and dangerous: a very steep slope exposed to avalanches, with several gullies to cross. Usually closed each year during the hunting season (roughly October to end of January).
