The place
The Abri des Pionniers is an open shelter at 810 m altitude in the Hautes-Vosges, Haut-Rhin department, near the Lac de Kruth. It lies within the Massif du Ventron National Nature Reserve and is reached via a trail marked with a red triangle, near the Vorder Bockloch stream. It offers no sleeping arrangements: a stop is tolerated but camping and bivouacking are prohibited by the nature reserve order (decree no. 89-331, article 20). It serves as an emergency shelter or a rain break for hikers.
