Abri de Planlebon

The place

Shelter at 1420 m in the Vallée des Encombres (Vanoise, Savoie), at the place called Planlebon. No sleeping arrangements provided. The hamlet of Planlebon was deserted: it had 36 inhabitants in 1773; records preserve the memory of an avalanche that swept away residents on their way to Mass in the chief town. After 1850, an exodus depopulated the mountains and abandoned isolated villages. One of 46 unstaffed huts and shelters, open year-round and free of charge, in the Vanoise massif.
