Abri-bivouac Eccles 1 (Lampugnani - Grassi)

The place

Italian bivouac at 3852 m on the southwest ridge of the Pic Eccles (4041 m), Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif (Courmayeur, Aosta Valley). Owned by the West group of the Italian Academic Alpine Club (CAAI). First built in 1939, destroyed in 1952 by the explosion of a petrol stove, rebuilt in 1958 slightly lower down. Named in honour of the mountaineer Giuseppe Lampugnani (1877-1940), one of the founders of the CAAI. Renamed Bivacco Giuseppe Lampugnani – Giancarlo Grassi in tribute to the Italian mountaineer Gian Carlo Grassi (1946-1991). Half-cylindrical steel structure with 6 places on mattresses with blankets, replacing the old one in 2011. No heating, water in the form of snow or ice. A "double" bivouac named Marco Crippa, slightly lower down, offers 9 identical places. Access in 6h from the Monzino refuge via the Brouillard glacier.
