A bit of history
The Carpathians were part of the Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovak states, which left behind a rich cultural heritage in the form of castles, monasteries and architecture. A tourist route through Zakarpattia already existed in the days of Czechoslovakia (1918–1939), when the region was actively developed for tourists from Prague and Vienna.
Getting there
Rakhiv: bus from Ivano-Frankivsk (3h) or Chernivtsi (3h). Uzhhorod: railway and airport with connections to Budapest, Prague and Warsaw.
Recommended gear
Trekking boots. Rain jacket. A tent is recommended for some sections. Insect repellent.
Best season
June–October. April–May – mountain flowers on the alpine meadows. October – beautiful autumn foliage colors.
