The place

The Walker's Haute Route is a high-alpine, hut-to-hut trek connecting Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn, crossing the French and Swiss Alps roughly parallel to the classic ski-mountaineering Haute Route. It threads through the Val Ferret, Val de Bagnes, Val d'Hérens and the Mattertal, crossing around ten mountain passes between 2,400m and 3,000m with several nights in staffed cabanes and refuges. It is considered one of the toughest classic long-distance treks in the Alps due to sustained daily ascent and descent, exposure on some passes, and overall length, finishing via the Europaweg balcony trail and the Charles Kuonen suspension bridge into Zermatt.
