Via Mariana
The place
The Via Mariana is Corsica's historic pilgrimage route, linking Calenzana in the north to Bonifacio in the south by way of the Marian shrine at Lavasina and the numerous Romanesque chapels scattered across the island's maquis and forests. Over around 200 km across 10 stages, it crosses inland Corsica through its medieval villages, sheepfolds and chestnut groves, far from the coastal crowds. Less technical than the GR20, it is accessible to regular hikers and offers an authentic immersion in rural, spiritual Corsica.

A bit of history
A route of devotion to the Virgin Mary dating back to the Middle Ages, the Via Mariana was walked by Corsican pilgrims travelling to the island's main Marian shrines. It was rediscovered and waymarked in the 2010s as part of a European project to promote Mediterranean pilgrimage routes.
Getting there
Calenzana: bus from Calvi (15 min) or Calvi airport. Bonifacio: accessible by bus from Porto-Vecchio or from Figari airport (15 min). Sea crossings to Sardinia from Bonifacio.

Waterproof hiking boots. Sunscreen. Water (limited springs). Optional poles. Standard hiking gear.
Best season
April to June and September to November. July–August too hot at low altitude. Spring offers an exceptional maquis bloom.
