Why go

The Julian Alps and Triglav National Park (SI). Upper Engadine and the Swiss National Park (CH). Col de l'Iseran and Vanoise National Park (FR). The Mercantour and the hinterland behind the Côte d'Azur (FR). Passages through alpine pastures and high-altitude farmland still in use today.

A bit of history

Route Y of the Via Alpina, officially recognized under the Alpine Convention between 2002 and 2009. It forms a bridge between the eastern and western Alps, linking the Slovenian, Austrian, Swiss and French trail networks into a single connecting thread.

Getting there

Ljubljana: reachable by air (Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport) or by train from Vienna, Zagreb and Venice. Monaco: rail connections from Nice and Ventimiglia.

Recommended gear

For the high sections: the same equipment as for the Via Alpina Red. A passport is required (the route crosses several countries).

Best season

July to September for the alpine sections. The lower Slovenian and Austrian sections are accessible from May–June.
