#### Weisstannental Valley: Immersion in a Preserved Alpine Landscape The Weisstannental valley, renowned for its wild character and steep slopes, is home to charming hamlets such as Vermol, as well as the enchanting Lake Champersee. High-mountain trails on the western flank of the valley lead to the key stage of Weisstannen. #### Sargans: Historic and Scenic Crossroads of the Alps Sargans, famous for its iconic castle, is nicknamed 'the double gateway to the Alps'. Founded in 1250, this medieval town sits at the junction of the Rhine and Seez valleys. Roman, medieval and modern remains coexist in this small area. Leaving the station, first follow the railway tracks, then skirt the Capuchin monastery of Mels to cross the Seez river on the outskirts of town. #### Route: From the Medieval Town to the Mountain Refuge This stage crosses the unspoilt Weisstannental valley, always overlooking or following the Seez, a tributary of Lake Walen. Passing vineyards and the ruins of Niberg castle, the path climbs boldly above the Seeztobel ravine to reach Vermol. Some sections along this stretch are particularly steep. Looking back, admire Sargans castle, an emblem and landmark for the whole region. Vermol stands out as the highest and youngest hamlet of Melserberg, reached via a road built in the late 18th century following the Napoleonic model, with distinctive paving stones and low walls lining the path. #### Nature and Culture: Discovering the First Inhabitants Crossing forests and meadows, you head deep into the waterfall-dotted Weisstannental valley. This peaceful and isolated place is nonetheless rich in Bronze Age remains, testifying to ancient human occupation. Place names indicate that the Raetians were the first settlers, followed by the Walser. Near Schwendi, the first village in the valley, the path descends to the Seez. A beautiful footpath along the river leads to the authentic alpine village of Weisstannen. #### Route and Viewpoints: An Adventure at Every Turn Take time to admire the view of Sargans castle in the background, a powerful symbol of the region, as you climb the terrain.
